VetGen Study of Hip Dysplasia

VetGen, in conjunction with the University of Michigan, is currently researching the genetic causes of hip dysplasia with the intent of developing a direct DNA test which will show the exact status of each dog, and it's ability to produce affected or non affected offspring. Breeders can use this information to clear their lines of the genes causing Hip Dysplasia by selecting a genetically complementary sire or dam.

What we are looking for are families of Golden Retrievers in which there are two or more littermates who have been diagnosed with hip dysplasia, either by the vet doing the X-ray, or OFA if the X-rays were submitted. We also need DNA samples from the parents, both whenever possible, and DNA from some unaffected siblings as well.

We have already made some progress on HD in Goldens, and may in fact, have identified genes that cause HD in Goldens. That's why it's so important now to get in as many new families as quickly as we can. We could be so close.

We are also conducting research on Juvenile or Early onset Cataracts. We need the same type of families listed for the HD study: two or more cataract affected littermates and parents and siblings.

For our research DNA samples are collected by means of small cheek swabs which are simply swiped in the dog's mouth and sent back to us. The swabs are free, participation is free. We enclose instructions for swabbing the dogs as well as a stamped, self-addressed envelope for their return. All information is completely confidential. No information on dogs, owners, address, phone numbers, E-mail address - nothing is ever released.
